These interesting rocks are commonly known as 'Moqui (or Moki) Marbles', named after the Moqui tribe of southern Utah.  These are iron concretions with a sandstone center, and are left behind when the surrounding sandstone erodes.  The can be found whole, broken, or still partially encased in stone.
